The Great Commission
Time flies when we are having fun! In the blink of an eye, I have been serving at the Chinese Presbyterian Church for over a year. Last week, I once again participated in the Orientation Week at two universities — The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Alongside other pastors and students, I had the opportunity to connect with university students arriving in Sydney for the first time.
At UNSW, since we were representing the Cantonese Christian Fellowship, we primarily reached out to Cantonese-speaking students. We were able to not only meet Christian students but also connect with many who have yet to come to know the Lord. Through conversing with these new students, inviting them to our welcome party and dinner, or even guiding them to hard-to-find locations, we were able to build relationships with them. When we encountered Mandarin-speaking students who showed interest in Christianity, we would introduce them to the Enrich Mandarin Bible Study (EMBS), led by Pastor Esther Wang. Why is the Cantonese Christian Fellowship so proactive in reaching out to students? I believe it is because of their fellowship motto:
Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'
—Matthew 28:18-20
The Great Commission that Jesus Christ gave to all His disciples is the motto, goal, and direction of the UNSW Cantonese Christian Fellowship. What about the Chopstix Fellowship at UTS?
Chopstix Fellowship is an English-speaking fellowship that welcomes all international students in Sydney, with the same goal of fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Last week, we actively conducted surveys to better understand the needs of international students and to care for their spiritual well-being. By God’s grace we have already connected with some students who are interested in Christianity. They have been attending our fellowship gatherings over the past two weeks to learn more about Jesus Christ. Last Sunday, I even saw some students joining our church service to further explore the Christian faith.
Brothers and sisters, are we actively carrying out the Great Commission that Jesus Christ has given us? Let us work together in fulfilling His command, as Jesus Christ is always with us, to the very end of the age.
