Psalm 8 tells us to look up at the heavens, moon, and stars and ponder this question - what is man that you are mindful of him? I do not know about you, but I remember when we could see stars in the sky in Sydney. Nowadays unless the night is clear we might not be able to see a sprinkle of stars across the skies. I remember going to Tenterfield as a young boy, and I could not believe the number of stars there were in the sky. Unlike the city, they were numerous and impossible to count, and I was just awe-struck by the majestic artwork I could see in the heavens. Scientific advancements help us to understand about the size and power of these stars. Sometimes it can make us feel tiny and insignificant, however, the size of stars is not what we should be considering, for sometimes what happens is we look up to the heavens but not above them. The Works of God’s hand are seen in creation, and he has set his glory above the heavens. What is truly majestic is not the cosmos but what is above the cosmos, that which is beyond the created order to things unseen and eternal. God is majestic and when the Psalmist looks up, he thinks what is man that the Creator God would be mindful of us? The greater reality is not creation itself but the God above it who made all the stars, and whose name is majestic in all the earth. The Psalm ultimately points to the son of man, Jesus our Saviour whose birth we will be celebrating this coming Christmas season. Christ’s birth was marked by a single star, and his birth is a reminder that God is mindful of us. How? He came from heaven to save us. In this way, God the Son came to dwell amongst us and to show his Eternal glory. By the revelation of Christ, we have a fuller understanding of Psalm 8 so that, when we look at creation or the heavens above, we can take great comfort that the Eternal God truly cares for us, even if we feel tiny and insignificant in this world. So, next time when you look up into the night sky be sure to give thanks and remember the God who made those stars truly cares for you.
