Do you have enough?
A famous author was once invited to speak at a business conference about his best-selling book. After his talk, a businessman came up to him and began to boast. He said, “Your best seller may have earned you millions, but my business earns many times that each month! Why should I learn how to do business from you?” The author calmly looked at him and replied, “yes that’s true, but I have one thing you don’t”. The businessman raised his eyebrow and remarked “what could you possibly have that I can’t buy or gain for myself?”. The author simply said “I have enough”.
It’s easy to let our drive of progress consume our everyday thoughts. Particularly during this season of economic stress and pressure. Although scripture does not deny us permission to strive and work for our family, it does pose a question for our souls, “what is enough for you?”. Is it a number in your bank account? A relationship you yearn for? An ambition to be fulfilled?
In Psalm 16, David writes, “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup”. The Lord is our enough. It is easy to let our fear of scarcity and missing out drive our daily life. But the Lord invites us not to join in the race of ambition, but to be satisfied with enough.
Enough hope for the day, enough purpose for our work, enough love for our families. Those things are unable to be bought, but priceless when we have them.
Do you have enough today? If so, praise the Lord. But if not, let’s pray for God to give us enough for today, to give us daily bread to continue to worship him.
